Dale Kempf, PHD '82 LAS
Distinguished research fellow and director for neglected diseases research with biopharmaceutical company Abbvie, has more than 35 years of pharmaceutical research and development experience, mostly in antiviral and infectious diseases research. He is a co-inventor of AbbVie’s HIV protease inhibitors Norvir™ (ritonavir) and Kaletra™ (lopinavir/ritonavir). Dr. Kempf co-directed AbbVie’s hepatitis C discovery program leading to the development of Viekira Pak™ (dasabuvir/ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir) and Mavyret™ (glecaprevir/pibrentasvir). He has published widely in areas of medicinal chemistry, pharmacology and drug resistance, and has received several awards, including the 1997 Intellectual Property Owners Association National Inventor of the Year Award, the 1999 Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Discoverers Award, the 2003 American Chemical Society Heroes of Chemistry Award, the 2008 Goshen College Culture for Service Award, the 2010 David Berry HIV DART Achievement Award, and the 2014 Yau Yuan Award for Excellence.
Currently Kempf coordinates the Neglected Diseases program at AbbVie, a cross-functional effort to work alongside partners dedicated to the discovery and development of new therapies for underserved populations. That program has identified a new clinical candidate for the treatment of onchocerciasis.
Kempf has coauthored more than 150 publications and is co-inventor on 87 U.S. patents. He currently serves on the Scientific Advisory Boards for Drug for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) and the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development (TB Alliance). He also serves on AbbVie’s scientific governing board and medicinal chemistry leadership team.
Laura E. Niklason, '83 LAS, '83 LAS
Laura E. Niklason is the Nicholas M. Greene Professor at Yale University in Anesthesia and Biomedical Engineering, where she has been on faculty since 2006. Dr. Niklason’s research focuses primarily on regenerative strategies for cardiovascular and lung tissues. Her engineered blood vessels are currently in clinical trials, and are the first life-sustaining engineered tissue to be studied in any Phase III trial. Niklason’s lab was also one of the first to describe the engineering of whole lung tissue that could exchange gas in vivo.
Niklason received her Ph.D. in biophysics from the University of Chicago, and her M.D. from the University of Michigan. In 2004, she co-founded Humacyte, a world leader in tissue engineering that has gained international attention for its work in developing a bioengineered human acellular vessel (HAV) that could replace the blood vessel or create new vascular access without requiring a patient’s cells or tissue.
Niklason was cited by Time for creating one of the 50 Best Inventions of 2010 (an engineered lung), inducted into the National Academy of Inventors in 2014, elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2015, named as a 2016 Alumni Achievement Award recipient for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, inducted into Women in Technology Hall of Fame in 2017, and named by Fortune magazine in 2017 as one of 34 Leaders Who are Changing Health Care. Humacyte received accolades in 2011 from Popular Mechanics for development of an “off-the-shelf” tissue engineered vascular graft.
