Exploring their roots, U of I faculty couple Warren Lavey and Holly Rosencranz, ’78 LAS, MD ’82 UIC, traveled to the Baltics last August with son Doug Lavey, ’14 LAS. The family traced the steps of their ancestors, including Rosencranz’s grandfather who was from Vilnius, Lithuania. A highlight of the trip was participating in 30th anniversary celebrations of the Baltic Way (a human chain connecting the three Baltic capitals). However, not everything was pleasant. “[We] were disturbed by the memorials and museums that told the story of Nazi and Soviet atrocities,” Rosencranz says. “On the lighter side, we had a picnic lunch at a beach on the Baltic Sea, hiked through beautiful parks and feasted on delicious beet soup.”
