Family Portraits: A Long History of Awkwardness
Featuring Keynote Speaker Ann Schmitt, vice president of programs, Peoria Riverfront Museum
2 p.m.
People love awkward family photos, both those of others and their own. Our speaker is no exception—in the course of preparing programs for the exhibition, she enjoyed investigating the history of awkward portraits from the annals of art history to the present. In this talk, Schmitt will share strange and amusing glimpses into the history of how and why we keep a visual record of ourselves and our loved ones, and why that record is worth preserving. Peoria Riverfront Museum hosted the exhibition Awkward Family Photos in 2015. The gallery exhibition is based on the Internet sensation of the same name.
